In a mesmerizing display of nature’s power and artistry, Ontario photographer Cody Evans skillfully captured a colossal wave on Lake Erie, resembling the perfect face, during a lake-effect storm last Saturday. Among the roughly 10,000 photographs taken during the storm, one image stood out, resembling a scene conjured up by Poseidon himself.
Cody Evans, a resident of Ingersoll, Ontario, has been passionately capturing photographs, primarily focusing on wildlife and nature, since January 2020. His connection with the outdoors led him to Lake Erie, specifically Port Stanley just south of London, whenever high winds were in the forecast – a condition perfect for capturing the raw beauty of nature.
On that particular Saturday, Evans set up his equipment for a couple of hours despite the chilly weather, recalling temperatures around -11°C. Initially impeded by snow, a 15-minute window emerged when the sun broke through the clouds, allowing Evans to witness the captivating collision of waves.
“I watched the water, and when I see waves are gonna collide, I’ll just take a burst of photos,” shared Evans. Utilizing his Nikon Z 9 camera, capable of capturing 20 photos per second, he documented the entire sequence of the wave collision.
“Then I go through all [of] the images, and I find the ones that I like, and that one happened to be the perfect face.”
According to Evans, some of the waves that clashed against each other on that Saturday were more than six meters high, emphasizing the raw and powerful force of nature. The resulting photograph not only captures the immense power of Lake Erie’s waves but also reveals a stunning and artistic resemblance to a perfect face, showcasing the intricate and captivating beauty of the natural world.
